General Meeting Minutes

The minutes for the April 2018 meeting and the April Treasurer’s Report were approved.

Retirement Board Representative Charlie Hogquist reported that the City is transferring its deferred comp investments from Valic to CalPERS.

Cynthia Queen reported that the SDCERS Board is in the process of choosing a new president, and that staff is recommending that the Board approve a cost of living increase of 2%.

The healthcare overview program will be May 30, 2018; and the annual Health Fair on June 22, 2018.

Vice-President for Advocacy Mike Bresnahan reported that the City’s Risk Management Department is very late on announcing the health care providers for next year.

Vice-President for Programs Dave Twomey thanked Tom Peña for stepping up and coordinating lunch service for the past three years.

PROGRAM

The program was our own Charlie Hogquist who shared some insights about San Diego that many of us locals are unaware of. These included: How San Diego and California got their names; the ironic history of the US Grant Hotel and its place in the local women’s movement; a commemorative site in Little Italy to the tuna fishermen whose boat were conscripted for use as patrol boats in WW2; the history of the Golden West Hotel in downtown, one of the few downtown buildings with neon signage; and why the Whaley House is so haunted.
