City of San Diego Retired Employees Association
April Meeting Minutes by Secretary Brad Jacobsen
Natasha Collura of SDCERS reported that some vacancies on the SDCERS Board are being filled.
PROGRAM
The program was Pat Nuñez who spoke about end-of-life planning. She recommended several actions that retirees should take to make life simpler for family during their time of grief.
Among other documents, a Health Care Directive informs medical personnel of your wishes about treatments should you become incapable of communication. Having a Trust will avoid probate costs. A Durable Power of Attorney assigns one person in charge of all legal matters, but be sure to let that designee know that they’ve been given this duty.
She also recommended making arrangements with a mortuary; they know exactly what to do upon death so relatives won’t struggle to get through paperwork immediately after death, which can take hours. (The police will not be of any help once they have determined no foul play was involved.)
She advised members to let the executor (and others) know where vital documents are located and any passwords needed to access accounts online, including passcodes on cellphones.
For additional funeral planning, she directed members to the San Diego Memorial Society.
