General Meeting Minutes
President Mike Bresnahan reported that 27 new members joined REA in February – a record number.
Natasha Collura of SDCERS informed members that some should be receiving a Dependent Verification letter. She explained that this letter goes out every five years, and is to confirm that the retiree’s dependent status is up to date.
PROGRAM
The program was new SDPD Chief Scott Wahl. He spoke about restructuring the Police Department to increase efficiency and to provide opportunities for civilian employees to advance their careers in SDPD.
He spoke about building trust between the SDPD and the communities within San Diego. He said that a lot of trust can be built by SDPD officers simply by engaging with residents at a crime scene to explain exactly why the SDPD was there. He also mentioned that understaffing may not make that possible, as officers have to go from one incident to another at a moment’s notice.
He also reported that cameras at traffic lights have been successful in helping to reduce auto theft crimes by 22%.
