November General Meeting Minutes

By Brad Jacobsen, Secretary

Vice-President for Advocacy Mike Bresnahan welcomed members.

Dave Twomey gave members an update on our Thanksgiving food drive; members can donate online via a link on REA’s website. Dave also reminded members of our annual Holiday Party on December 13 at the Bali Hai, including a special cake from Extraordinary Desserts.

Joan McNamara presented the slate of candidates for Board positions. Brad Jacobsen (Secretary) and Joan Hernandez (Board Member) have agreed to remain on the Board. Abby Salaiz (Treasurer) and Ty Rogers (Board Member) are not seeking re-election; Liza Crisafi and Stacey LoMedico are running for those seats, respectively. Mike asked for nominations from the floor; seeing none, he asked for a voice vote to approve the slate of candidates. The vote was unanimous in favor to elect Liza Crisafi as Treasure; Joan Hernandez as Board Member; Brad Jacobsen as Secretary; and Stacey LoMedico as Board Member. According to REA’s by-laws, they will take office in January 2023.

Cynthia Queen of SDCERS informed members that the SDCERS Board approved the Annual Supplemental Benefit. She also reported that the healthcare mailers have gone out, and that SDCERS’ annual meeting is available to view on their website.

Gregg Rademacher informed members that the Union-Tribune ran a very good and very neutral article about the payments that the City must make as part of the Prop B settlement.

PROGRAM

The program was our annual November visit from Dr Carl Luna, appropriately on Election Day. He mused about how big the “red wave” could be, and what the Democrats can do about it, noting that if the Republicans control both houses of Congress, Biden will be having a “veto-fest”. He pointed out that the Dems have no message, and for the Republicans the “bozos” and “clowns” win. On local issues, he said that homelessness, infrastructure, and housing are the big issues. The City Council will be all-Democrat and engage in “factional politics” while moving in a common direction.
