October Program

A great program lined up for you featuring our annual visit with SDCERS covering the state of the retirement system after a volatile year. Presenters will be Marcelle Voorhies Rossman; Deputy CEO, Cynthia Queen; Member Services Director, Carina Coleman; Chief Investment Officer and Sandra Claussen; Medical Review Officer.

This segment will be followed by a visit with Jonathan Hayes, CEO of the Public Employees Benefit Association (PEBA). Jon started his career working for the City of San Diego when he was 15 years old as a library aide at the Otay Mesa branch. He then went to college at Cal Poly Pomona, where he earned his degree in Agricultural Science.

Although becoming “farmer Jon” was an appealing career option, he soon realized his calling as he assisted MEA in their roll out of Sharp Health Plan in 1996. He continued to work with MEA and developed his skills as a benefits manager, until he branched out and became an independent agent/broker working with other labor organizations in California.

Over time he began to bring in more and more organizations and soon represented: AFSCME 127, MEA, SD Fire, REA and POA.

Jon then made it his goal to bring all of his City of San Diego clients together for benefits. In 2017, his goal was realized when REA, MEA, and RFPA agreed on a pilot program to offer benefits under the name SDPEBA, with Jon as the benefits manager. This pilot program was such a success that in 2019 AFSCME 127 and SDPOA joined bringing SDPEBA’s group size to just over 12,000 active and retired employees. Jon now acts as the general manager of SDPEBA, CEO of ILS and Super Dad to his two sons Randy and Isaiah.

Jon will cover supplemental benefits available to members such as dental and vision insurance, pet insurance, legal assistance, and others for 2023.

Each segment will include a presentation followed by a question and answer session. Every member should take advantage of this once-a-year opportunity!
